Twenty-One

Arn pulled into the parking lot at the Archer Complex in front of the arena that hosted the dog class. He walked into the pole barn and stood by the bleachers, taking in the musty odor of recent sheep dung, the hushed whispers of students as they watched the instructor giving silent commands to her dog. The beginning and intermediate classes sat with their dogs, observing Bonnie’s Border collie as she worked sheep in the pen. Bonnie—looking considerably more human now that she was sober and cleaned up—gave commands with her hand.

Beverly sat next to Eddie Glass in the bleachers beside other spectators watching the exhibition. Then Eddie stood and smoothed his jeans, pressed with a crease sharp enough you’d slice your hand on it. He ran his finger under the flowing red silk bandana around his neck as he walked to the center of the arena. His back to the class, he bent and said something to Bonnie before motioning to her dog.

Arn joined Beverly on the bottom row of bleachers.

“He’s fine-tweaking Buckwheat,” Beverly said as if reading his mind. “The dog needs more work. Eddie’s like that—always helping folks with their dogs.”

“Fine dog of hers.”

“Buckwheat is my dog,” Beverly said. “I bought her out of Eddie’s litter two years ago. I thought it’d be good for Bonnie to get some working-time with her.”

Eddie stepped aside and let Bonnie send the Border collie after three sheep milling together at the far side of the arena. “So how have you been holding up?” Arn asked.

“Holding up?”

“Don. I understand you two were close.”

Beverly grabbed a can of Copenhagen from her shirt pocket. “Don thought we were closer than we actually were.” She paused and looked away. “That sounded cold, didn’t it?”

Arn waved the air as if to dismiss the comment. “I just thought with him helping teach the class …” He trailed off.

“Don was a friend who sometimes helped me around the ranch.”

“And with your class, to be close to you, the way it sounds.”

“He did.” Beverly replaced the can in her pocket. “But we weren’t an item if that’s what you heard.”

“Sometimes I assume things when I shouldn’t,” Arn said, pulling out his pocket notebook. His prop. “Did Don fight with anyone in the class lately? Maybe someone he’d had a run-in with recently?”

Beverly laughed. “That would take more ambition than he had. No, Don was the easy-going type. You could have spit in his face and he would have just smiled at you before wiping it off.”

Eddie moved closer to Bonnie on one side of the arena, and Arn stretched his legs out in front of him. “I thought this was your and Bonnie’s class.”

“How’s that?”

“Eddie,” Arn said. “It appears that he’s conducting the class.”

Beverly smiled and motioned to Eddie. “He had nothing else to do today. He just returned from a show, and he was gracious enough to stop and help. Why?”

Arn shrugged. “Just curious. It looks like it’ll be a while before I can visit with him.”
